The Assignment

Assessment 4: Game Programming
Weighting: 30%
Outcomes: The student
5.2.2    designs, produces and evaluates appropriate solutions to a range of challenging problems
5.5.2    communicates ideas, processes and solutions to a targeted audience

Due Date: Term 4, end of Week 7.

Your task this term is to create a “game” using the programming language Scratch. The program could be any of the following game formats;

  • Role Play
  • Puzzle
  • Story Telling
  • Action/Arcade

The program should be;
  • Engaging and possess a clear objective.
  • Require skill and offer various levels of difficulty.
  • Your own work!

The program should possess the following elements in a bid to make it instructive and engaging;

  1. Multiple Backgrounds – these might include an opening screen of instructions or scene changes resulting from progressing through different levels.
  2. Multiple Sprites / Multiple Costumes – the appearance of the sprites should change at various times in the course of the program.
  3. Scoring – variables should be used to record user scores.
  4. User Input To Control Sprites – sprites should be controlled through either mouse or keyboard input
  5. Clear Instruction – instructions to the user should be provided prior to commencing the program and possibly throughout the program.
  6. Sound – the program should include background music or sound effects.
  7. GUI – a well thought out graphical user interface; uncluttered, good selection of colour combinations, intuitive.

Design and development of the program should be documented at regular intervals on your blog.
Feedback and Evaluation:
Once you have created your program, your are to test it on fellow students and obtain their feedback via your blog (please use the same blog that you have registered on the 9IST site). You will do this by posting about your program, what is it called, where it can be found, it’s purpose and a bit about how you created it (include screen shots). In your post you should invite readers to complete a Poll you have created on the blog.

Creating a Poll is outlined here;


You should seek to evaluate the following areas;

  • Objectives/instructions were clear?
  • Suitable GUI?
  • The program was engaging?
  • Degree of difficulty?
  • Suggestions for improvement?
  • Effective use of sound

At least three people should complete your survey.

Submission Of Program And Evaluation
The finished program should be uploaded to;

The “Student Work” list on the left of the 9IST Site’s Home page

The files are to be named as follows;

programname_yoursurname_class.sb

for example     pong_lennon_91.sb     or    frogger_smith_92.sb


Check List:
Your assignment is finished when you have;
  1. Created a scratch program and saved it to the correct location
  2. Created posts about your program that talk about its purpose and development and where the program can be found.
  3. Created a Poll on your post and invited at least three people to complete it
