The Assignment

Assessment 4: Game Programming
Weighting: 30%
Outcomes: The student
5.2.2    designs, produces and evaluates appropriate solutions to a range of challenging problems
5.5.2    communicates ideas, processes and solutions to a targeted audience

Due Date: Term 4, end of Week 7.

Your task this term is to create a “game” using the programming language Scratch. The program could be any of the following game formats;

  • Role Play
  • Puzzle
  • Story Telling
  • Action/Arcade

The program should be;
  • Engaging and possess a clear objective.
  • Require skill and offer various levels of difficulty.
  • Your own work!

The program should possess the following elements in a bid to make it instructive and engaging;

  1. Multiple Backgrounds – these might include an opening screen of instructions or scene changes resulting from progressing through different levels.
  2. Multiple Sprites / Multiple Costumes – the appearance of the sprites should change at various times in the course of the program.
  3. Scoring – variables should be used to record user scores.
  4. User Input To Control Sprites – sprites should be controlled through either mouse or keyboard input
  5. Clear Instruction – instructions to the user should be provided prior to commencing the program and possibly throughout the program.
  6. Sound – the program should include background music or sound effects.
  7. GUI – a well thought out graphical user interface; uncluttered, good selection of colour combinations, intuitive.

Design and development of the program should be documented at regular intervals on your blog.
Feedback and Evaluation:
Once you have created your program, your are to test it on fellow students and obtain their feedback via your blog (please use the same blog that you have registered on the 9IST site). You will do this by posting about your program, what is it called, where it can be found, it’s purpose and a bit about how you created it (include screen shots). In your post you should invite readers to complete a Poll you have created on the blog.

Creating a Poll is outlined here;

You should seek to evaluate the following areas;

  • Objectives/instructions were clear?
  • Suitable GUI?
  • The program was engaging?
  • Degree of difficulty?
  • Suggestions for improvement?
  • Effective use of sound

At least three people should complete your survey.

Submission Of Program And Evaluation
The finished program should be uploaded to;

The “Student Work” list on the left of the 9IST Site’s Home page

The files are to be named as follows;

programname_yoursurname_class.sb

for example     pong_lennon_91.sb     or    frogger_smith_92.sb

Check List:
Your assignment is finished when you have;
  1. Created a scratch program and saved it to the correct location
  2. Created posts about your program that talk about its purpose and development and where the program can be found.
  3. Created a Poll on your post and invited at least three people to complete it

Flow Charts

For each of the flowcharts below describe in words what you think they will do.
1. Descibe the decision process within an idea
2. Describe the decision and outcome for a print
3. Describe the process for an experiment involving LED light

Convert one of the algorithms you have created in the previous task into a flowchart, e.g.  opening a door, moving through a traffic light
-

Computer Algorithems

“Computers never do what you want them to do,
they only do what you tell them to!”
Using the web, find definitions for the following terms and post them on your blog. Make sure the definitions relate to computers and programming

Algorithms: A process or set of rules to be followed in calculations or other problem-solving operations, esp. by a computer
Pseudocode:A notation resembling a simplified programming language, used in program design   Machine Language: a programming language designed for use on a specific class of computers

Flowchart: a diagram of the sequence of operations in a computer program or an accounting system

High Level Computer Language: a programming language with strong abstraction from the details of the computer

Sequence: particular order in which related events, movements, or things follow each other

Selection: The action or fact of carefully choosing someone or something as being the best or most suitable  Repetition: The action of repeating something that has already been said or written

Phone Advice ( 09/09/2011 )

Imagine you work as an assistant in a mobile phone shop. A mother comes into your shop wanting to buy a smart phone for her daughter. Her mother is not very “tech savvy” and needs some concepts and features explained. Below are some of her questions, do your best to provide meaningful answers in simple terms;

1.       “My daughter insists that her phone be Wifi capable? What does this mean? Why does she need it?”
Wifi Capable basically means that the phone will be able to conect to Wifi Networks, which once the phone is connected allows the user onto the internet to do a whole range of things from social networking to using an app device to connect with you for free.

2.       The mother says “She wants the camera in the phone to be at least 5 Meg thingys, what does this mean? Does she need it?”
5 mega pixels, it will mean a better quality on the photos she takes, although it is a very good idea to have better quality on photos, its not essential

3.       “My daughter wants a phone with a capacitive touch screen. They seem more expensive, what advantages do they offer over other types of touch screens?”
A Capacitive touch screen consists of an Insulator coated with a transparent conductor, meaning that you cant use the touch screen through something like gloves, you have to use the speacial stylist

4.       “Are all phone as smart as one another? What is the smartest phone at the moment and why?”
It really depends on the gadgets and work involved in the phone, but at the moment the best smart phone you can get would be the HTC Desire HD its slim, the larger screen makes it easy to read messages, display photos and play games and is sharp in the colour departnment

5.       “She wants to take lots of video and photos. How do I know which phone can store the most videos and photos?”
The phone that can store the most video and photos would be one with a large amount of memory, but also if you find a good phone with a low amount of memory there is always the option of an SD Card which you can place into the phone like a USB into a computer, and it can be moved to any other phone with an SD Card slot so if you change phones, you dont have to reload everything, just click and go.
6.       “She says she wants to be able to buys apps. What are apps? What sort of useful apps could she access? What types of phones can buy and use apps?”
APP is an abbreviation for application, apps are basically activities, games, helpful information and links to websites that keep people up to date and allow people access to everything they need.
There is one app called SCHOOLBOOK which you can buy from the Itunes App store which lets you transfer your school timetable into your phone or ipod, so you'll never be without it again because teenagers carry there phones and ipods everywhere but dont bother much with diaries or pieces of paper
There are also apps that can connect her to her friends via facebook, skype, myspace and connect her to you lik Viber and Facetime which link to you or any member of the family who has the smart phone application

FINISHED !!!!

The title says it all.............. :)
